Report: Race 2 Misano

In the 25-minute Sunday race Harald Schlegelmilch set another lap record. Victory for the new champion Simone Colombo in FORMULA class.

The drivers of the BOSS GP Racing Series completed their final race of the season at the Pirelli Grande Finale in the best possible autumn weather.

BOSS GP OPEN Class

For the last time this season Harald Schlegelmilch (LVA, HS Engineering) was on the hunt for the lap record. Once again the former Formula 3 ace succeeded in improving the existing best time of 1:21.822, set in yesterday’s race. Today, Schlegelmilch achieved a fabulous time of 1:20.785 (average speed: 188 km/h) in his World Series Dallara with a 4.5-litre engine. The 34-year-old thus makes history and at the same time thanks his Austrian team with the tenth victory of the season in the OPEN class.

BOSS GP FORMULA Class

Once again, Saturday’s race winner Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) and the new champion Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International) got together very close. Only a few centimetres separated the two GP2 cars as they turned into the first corner at the World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. A resumption of the “duel of the season” failed to unfold, however, because Ghiotto spun into the grass only a short time later. But the 2019 to 2021 champion was able to continue and take home at least one more trophy with second place. Colombo celebrated the victory as a cherry on top of the championship title he had already secured yesterday.

Michael Aberer (AUT, MA Motorsport) was on his way to the podium for most of the race distance. But Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International) had something against it. As yesterday, the Italian managed to overtake rival after rival after a weak start and once again complete an all-Italian podium. After a spin by Aberer (finished 5th), Paul O’Connell (IRE, HS Engineering) also overtook the Austrian. O’Connell not only impressed with fast lap times in his WSbR, but also attracted attention with a spin in the early stages. Because he was also able to continue his drive, the chase was rewarded with his best result in the BOSS GP to date.

Giancarlo Pedetti (ITA, Nannini Racing) finished the race in sixth place, Walter Steding (GER, Scuderia Palladio) in seventh. With these points, Steding was able to improve one more place in the championship. With fourth place overall in the championship, he repeated his ranking from the previous year.

BOSS GP SUPER LIGHTS Class

Alexander Geier (AUT, Geier Racing) again started the race from 4th place overall. With used tyres, however, he had a much harder time today than yesterday and as a result he dropped further back in the field. Nevertheless, he crowned his performance this weekend with the second victory in class. Walter Colacino (ITA, Colacino Motorsport) in a Formula 3000 took second place. Champion Andreas Hasler (AUT, Hasler Motorsport) was absent this weekend due to health reasons.

After twelve races in five different countries, the BOSS GP Racing Series 2022 comes to an end. The planning for the 2023 season is already underway, the first round of the season is expected to start in April.

Report: Qualifying Misano

Schlegelmilch takes pole position in the wet. Colombo with best starting position in FORMULA class and big surprise by Alexander Geier.

Harald Schlegelmilch (LVA, HS Engineering) secured the best starting position for the Pirelli Grande Finale in qualifying on Saturday morning. In damp conditions, the OPEN class driver was in a class of his own in his tuned World Series car. In the absence of the BOSS GP F1 Class, he set by far the fastest lap time of the final BOSS GP qualifying session of the year with 1:35.159.

With second place overall in qualifying, Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International) took an important step towards the FORMULA class title. Although his main rival, Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio), came close to him towards the end of the half-hour session, Colombo defended himself with another improvement of his lap time.

Alexander Geier (AUT, Geier Racing) caused a sensation. The six-cylinder driver from the SUPER LIGHTS class qualified in fourth place overall and thus topped his previous best performance by far. With dry conditions forecast, can he defend himself against the armada of GP2 cars in the race?

Geier’s compatriot Michael Aberer (MA Motorsport) will start the race from row 3 together with Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International). Giancarlo Pedetti (ITA, Nannini Racing) and Paul O’Connell (IRE, HS Engineering) will start from row 4. As a rain specialist, O’Connell had expected a lot in the wet conditions. But the Irishman lost valuable track time after a spin and was only able to return to qualifying late in the session.

The eleventh race of the season with a distance of 20 minutes starts today at 14:35.

Report: Qualifying Mugello

Pole position for Ingo Gerstl at the “Forza Fanatec” in Mugello. Ghiotto holds his own against FORMULA leader Colombo and Andreas Hasler is fastest in the SUPER LIGHTS.

Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed) confirmed his role as favourite with the best time in qualifying. With a lap time of 1:26.747, the driver of a Toro Rosso STR1 secured pole position for the two race rounds in Mugello. Gerstl will be followed at the start by OPEN driver Harald Schlegelmilch (LVA, HS Engineering) in the World Series car with 4.5 litres capacity (instead of 3.5). Thomas Jackermeier (GER, Top Speed) will start from row 2. Jackermeier is competing for the first time in a Formula 1 car at Mugello and is doing excellently so far. Will he be able to step up a gear in the race and follow Gerstl?

Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) secured the best starting position in the highly competitive FORMULA classification. The two-time BOSS GP champion started in qualifying section 2 after a cautious Friday practice run and it took him a few laps to get past team-mate Francesco Malavasi (ITA) on the timings and then championship leader Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International). With a fantastic time of 1:35.035, Ghiotto qualified almost nine tenths of a second ahead of Colombo, who lost time especially in the first sector. Filling the starting row behind are BOSS GP rookie Francesco Malavasi and Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International), who is a candidate for the podium with a good qualifying performance on one of his favourite tracks. Team-mate Salvatore de Plano (ITA) follows behind.

With Joey Foster (GBR, HS Engineering) withdrawing from the event, the only World Series by Renault 3.5-litre pilot Paul O’Connell qualified sixth in class. Best from the Zig-Zag squad was Nicolas Matile (MCO) in the Auto GP Lola in eighth in class, just ahead of teammate Jean Christophe Peyre (FRA). Team leader Marc Faggionato (MCO) was unable to take part in practice after spinning and will therefore have a race to catch up.

In the SUPER LIGHTS category, rookie Alexander Geier (AUT, Geier Racing) only familiarised himself with the track today after still being in school yesterday. Geier’s Tatuus World Series V6, however, remained in the pits with gearbox problems, so Andreas Hasler (AUT, Hasler Motorsport) will start the races as the best-placed SUPER LIGHTS competitor. Walter Colacino (ITA, Colacino Motorsport) qualified his Formula 3000 in 15th place overall.

The first race starts today, Saturday, at 15:05 local time and is over a distance of 20 minutes, the second race over 25 minutes is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, at 13:15. In order to keep the workload on the Formula 1 cars low, the BOSS GP F1 Class will see the chequered flag after 15 minutes.

Report: Brno Qualifying

Colombo with surprising best qualifying time, Jackermeier on pole position in the BOSS GP F1 Class, Hasler dominates SUPER LIGHTS in Brno.

Formula 1 rookie Thomas Jackermeier (GER, Top Speed) will take the BOSS GP F1 Class to the green flag for the first time in his career. The German set the fastest time of 1:47:271 in his Toro Rosso STR3, Sebastian Vettel’s legendary winning car at Monza in 2008. Series dominator Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed) did not take part in qualifying with his Toro Rosso STR1, but will try to take part in the race.

The absolute fastest time in qualifying for both BOSS GP races was set by Italian Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International). Colombo played to the aerodynamic strengths of his Formula 2 car and secured pole position in the FORMULA class. His time of 1:43:879 could not be beaten by any of his rivals. Defending champion Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) was more than two seconds ahead in second place with 1:46:733. The top three were completed by Francesco Malavasi (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) with a time of 1:46:776, Malavasi’s best qualifying performance so far. Andreas Fiedler (GER, Fiedler Racing) will start the race from fourth place with a time of 1:47:192. For him, it is a good result on his comeback after numerous technical problems.

In the BOSS GP SUPER LIGHTS, Andreas Hasler (AUT, Hasler Motorsport) secured the best time with 2:01:679. He thus distanced his main rival Alexander Geier (AUT, Geier Motorsport) by more than a second.

The races scheduled for today, Saturday, at 2 p.m. and tomorrow, Sunday, at 12:50. Before the races, there will be a grid walk for spectators on site, and you can watch the races from home via livestream.

Report: Le Castellet Qualifying

Quickest times for Gerstl, Schlegelmilch, Chovanec-Lopez and Geier in qualifying for the French Historic Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard.

Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed) leads the BOSS GP F1 Class to the green light for the fifth time this season. Gerstl in the Toro Rosso STR1 took the clear pole position for the two races at the Le Castellet Grand Prix circuit with a time of 1:42.953. Next best F1 driver in qualifying was Ulf Ehninger (GER, ESBA Racing) in his Benetton B197. Ehninger is racing at Le Castellet for the first time and is already coping amazingly well with the demanding circuit on day two. A highlight for the French fans is the appearance of Didier Sirgue (FRA, LRS Racing) in the Jaguar R2. Sirgue qualified third in Eddie Irvine’s car from the 2001 Formula 1 season. As recently proved at the Red Bull Ring, the F1 Class will again start the race at the Grand Prix de France Historique around twenty seconds ahead of the rest of the field. This is to reduce the risks at the start of the race.

The closest to Gerstl’s best time was again Harald Schlegelmilch (LVA, HS Engineering) in his modified World Series car. Schlegelmilch is therefore the favorite to win the OPEN classification.

The leader of the FORMULA class, Zdenek Chovanec-Lopez (PRT, MM International), also set the pace in qualifying. Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International) qualified second in class, ahead of fast BOSS GP returnee Marc Faggionato (MCO, Zig-Zag). Close behind was Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio), who managed to move up the results list from far behind with a spot-on lap just before the end. Francesco Malavasi (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) was able to meet the expectations after the good practice sessions on Friday and finished fifth ahead of Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International).

In the BOSS GP SUPER LIGHTS Class, Alexander Geier (AUT, Geier Racing) prevailed over his compatriot and season dominator Andreas Hasler (AUT, Hasler Motorsport). Geier thus also rewarded his team, which put a lot of working time into the Formula Renault bolide with V6 engine after a fire at Hockenheim.

The two races will start today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) at 3:30 p.m. local time. There will already be the grid walk from 2:50 p.m. The races can be followed live on the Automoto La chaîne YouTube (only in France) stream.

Report: Hockenheim Race 1

Tens of thousands of fans listened intently as the BOSS GP made its comeback at the Hockenheimring.

In the first race of the 2022 season, Latvian Harald Schlegelmilch (HS Engineering) achieved the rare feat of taking FORMULA class victory from the last grid position. After a couple of laps, the former German Formula 3 trophy winner was already in the top three of the class, and on the sixth lap he finally overtook the FORMULA leader Zdenek Chovanec-Lopez (CZE, MM International). Schlegelmilch thus won for the fourth time in the BOSS GP Racing Series after Spielberg and Brno 2021. Chovanec-Lopez was also delighted with second place in his BOSS GP debut race.

Behind them, a three-way battle between the Italians Marco Ghiotto (Scuderia Palladio), Simone Colombo and Luca Martucci (both MM International) was going on for a while – including tyre lockups and a couple of overtake attempts. On the penultimate lap, Colombo managed the decisive braking manoeuvre against Ghiotto in the hairpin. Colombo thus jumped onto the podium “last minute”.

With a light gap, the Irishman Paul O’Connell (“I’m living my dream”) from HS Engineering finished in sixth place. 7th place in class was still being fought for all the way to the finish line: Bianca Steiner (AUT, Steiner Motorsport), who had already passed Walter Steding (GER, Scuderia Palladio) in the meantime, complained about a sudden loss of power. In the end, it was just not enough to challenge Steding for seventh place. Giancarlo Pedetti (ITA, Nannini Racing) also finished his debut race in the BOSS GP Racing Series in the top ten with a ninth place.

OPEN race winner Ingo Gerstl from Team Top Speed

The OPEN class was once again safe for Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed) in the Toro Rosso F1. Ulf Ehninger (GER, ESBA Racing) from Tübingen in a Benetton F1 kept out of all the FORMULA class fights and secured second place. His Benetton twin Phil Stratford (USA, Penn Elcom) was only seen for a short time, he had to retire from the race early on due to technical problems.

Michael Aberer (MA Motorsport) was among those beaten in race 1: The Austrian did it like Sebastien Vettel once did and sunk his chances for a top position in the gravel bed of the Sachs curve – but the damage to his GP2 car should be repaired by the second race. Report Race 2 Misano

Making the most of home advantage: With Ghiotto, Colombo and Martucci again three Italians on the podium.

In even hotter temperatures than yesterday, the BOSS GP drivers were once again enormously challenged in the 25-minute main race at the Misano World Circuit. Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio), Saturday’s winner, kept his cool from the start and was never in danger of losing his top spot. The championship leader in the FORMULA class won for the fifth time in the sixth race of the season. Ghiotto is now fully on course for title number 3.

The longest on the tail of Ghiotto’s Dallara Formula 2 was compatriot Simone Colombo (MM International), who shared the fastest lap of the race with Ghiotto and bring home second place, as he had done yesterday – but even he could not effectively put the frontrunner under pressure. Nevertheless, after this very successful weekend for the Italian, Colombo also takes the role of the first chaser in the overall standings.

Marco Ghiotto was unstoppable in Misano

Finishing behind the BOSS GP rookie was MM International teammate Luca Martucci (ITA), who showed unusual caution, especially at the beginning of the race. In the early stages Martucci had fallen behind Andreas Fiedler (GER, Fiedler Racing) and even in the slipstream it took him a long time to attempt an overtaking manoeuvre.

Fiedler is celebrating his birthday today, and for a long time it even looked as if he could round it off with a top-3 finish. In the first race, Fiedler was slowed down by a deformed tie rod, and today, too, he had to let both Martucci and newcomer Paul O’Connell (IRE, HS Engineering) pass him with degrading tyres in the further stages of the race. Rookie O’Connell again impressed with numerous overtaking manoeuvres in his second ever BOSS GP race.

Thomas Jackermeier (GER, Top Speed) showed a clean and fearless performance today after yesterday’s unfortunate starting collision – he finished in sixth place. Son Simon (GER, Top Speed), competing for the second time in a BOSS GP race, started cautiously at first, but then improved enormously with similar fast lap times as his dad, overtaking Maurizio Copetti (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) and Christian Ferstl (AUT, Top Speed) for 8th place behind Walter Steding (GER, Scuderia Palladio).

Maurizio Copetti wins the SUPER LIGHTS category

Copetti won the SUPER LIGHTS classification in his V6 WSbN single seater. He was at the front of the pack in the early stages, but a mistake at the end of the last corner almost ended his race. Only with the right movements behind the wheel and a bit of luck he was able to avoid a crash. Gianluca De Lorenzi (RSM, GDL Racing) had to learn early on what can happen when you push too hard. Lying in second place, he also went wide on the curbs in his WSbR Dallara at the end of the last turn. The car than lost contact with the ground, was thrown into the meadow, and then stopped by the tyre barrier. The fourth-placed driver from race 1 had to end the second race very early, but at least without any major damage to man or machine.

After the summer break, the BOSS GP Racing Series will be back in action with the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring (13 to 15 August 2021). Finally with fans again and in the beautiful and prestigious setting of one of the biggest motorsport events in Europe.

Report Race 1 Misano

Ghiotto defends all attacks and triumphs again.

It was not only the asphalt that was boiling on this race Saturday at the BOSS GP premiere at the World Circuit Misano. It also became hot under the helmets, as numerous drivers saw their chances of overall victory this time because of the absence of Formula 1 and IndyCars from the OPEN class.

Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) and Gianluca De Lorenzi (RSM, GDL Racing) started the 20-minute race from row 1. But already on the first metres they got company from Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International), who had started from the second row. Martucci pushed alongside and wanted to take the lead. But Ghiotto held his own, braking on the inside and a little later than Martucci, thus retaining the top position. Behind, Martucci ran out of room against Colombo and Fiedler, resulting in a collision with Thomas Jackermeier, who touched Martucci’s Dallara GP2. Both drivers were able to continue the race. Jackermeier, however, only after a safety stop at his crew in the pits.

Further back in the field, Christian Ferstl’s race came to an end on lap 2, while he was in an intense three-way battle with Bruno Jarach (EST, Eesti Motorsport) and Paul O’Connell (IRE, HS Engineering). Because the car of hillclimb specialist Ferstl parked on a dangerous spot, the Fanatec Safety Car was sent out onto the track.

At the restart, Ghiotto was confronted with the next attack, because Colombo tried to pass the defending champion in the first corner, a slow right-left-right combination. But Ghiotto blocked cleverly, and Colombo also demolished his front wing in the failed overtaking attempt. It did not take long for De Lorenzi to take advantage of Colombo’s resulting handling problems and retake second place. The quickest World Series by Renault driver quickly set off in pursuit of Ghiotto – pushing hard with fastest lap times. But Ghiotto was smart with his tyres and really gear up the pace at the halfway point of the race. De Lorenzi, on the other hand, was suddenly busy with Colombo, who was still able to keep Martucci behind him with a slightly damaged front wing. On the penultimate lap, Colombo made the overtaking manoeuvre and passed De Lorenzi. Things got even worse, as Martucci also overtook Gianluca on the very last lap and made it onto the podium.

This meant that the podium was completely in Italian hands this time: Ghiotto triumphed in the fifth race this year for the fourth time in the FORMULA class. BOSS GP rookie Simone Colombo not only scored 22 valuable points with second place, but also his best career finish, and Luca Martucci stood on the class podium for the third time this year.

Behind De Lorenzi, O’Connell crossed the finish line in the HS Engineering winning car from Spielberg. The Irishman showed a strong race performance from the last grid position and was rewarded with fifth place. Even the experienced Andreas Fiedler, who even tackled the top-3 in the first laps of the race, and Walter Steding (GER, Scuderia Palladio) could not keep the BOSS GP newcomer behind them. Simon Jackermeier (GER, Top Speed) also finished his very first race respectably and without major difficulties in eight place in the FORMULA classification.

The winner’s trophy in the SUPER LIGHTS classification went to Maurizio Copetti (Scuderia Palladio). Copetti made sure that the Italian anthem was played twice today. After a warm-up at 9:30 a.m., the 25-minute main race of the BOSS GP Racing Series will follow tomorrow, Sunday, at 3:10 p.m. local time (again in the livestream) as part of the Peroni race weekend in Misano.

Report Free Practice Spielberg

The BOSS GP with pictures for the ages? Impressive show run with Formula 1 cars and IndyCars on Friday.

Usually, the Red Bull Ring is home to the Formula 1 World Championship and MotoGP, but this weekend the BOSS GP Racing Series is a guest in Styria. After the six-week break since the Season Opening in Mugello, the track time was used extensively on Austria’s most beautiful racetrack and enough kilometres were recorded – the weather also played along on this Friday. It stayed dry all day, so all the drivers were able to test their cars extensively. Especially for the first-time starters, every metre on the 4.3-kilometre track around the iconic bull counted. Among others, Anton Werner (GER, Ryschka) drove a Chip Ganassi IndyCar from the mid-2000s today.

At the start of the second practice session, there was a memorable moment in BOSS GP’s history: there was a phalanx of Big Open Single Seaters on track that had not been seen for a long time, with the two Benetton B197s, the Sauber C30, a Jaguar R3, two Toro Rosso STR1s, Vettel’s winning STR3 car and two Ryschka IndyCars. During this showrun, impressive footage of man and machine was captured by a camera team and will soon be shown on the BOSS GP social media channels.

In total 22 drivers set a time today. Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed) dominated both practice sessions in his 2006 Toro Rosso. Riccardo Ponzio (ITA, Adriatica Competiton) in the Jaguar R3 was second fastest in the combined times from the first and second practice session. Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio) was third fastest FORMULA driver today. Rounding up the top five were Simone Colombo and Luca Martucci (both ITA, MM International). These five have gained a bit of an advantage that way, they will have the track to themselves in Q1. Depending on the weather conditions, it will be decided tomorrow, Saturday, whether qualifying will start in two groups as usual or whether there will be a 30-minute session with all drivers. The chances of rain are increasing until tomorrow. In any case, there will be two races on Saturday (11:20 and 15:55).

Report Race 1 Mugello

Marco Ghiotto beats everyone in the first race of the season. Premier victory for Ulf Ehninger in OPEN class.

Hectic hustle and bustle just before race start on the grid. Most of the teams changed from the Pirelli Cinturato rain tyres to the P Zero slicks. The rain had stopped before the start of the race, so that a large part of the 5.2-kilometre-long track had dried up. Nevertheless, a small group of drivers including Marco Ghiotto (ITA, Scuderia Palladio), Andreas Fiedler (GER, Fiedler Racing), Bruno Jarach (EST, Eesti Motorsport) and Formula 3000 individual Walter Colacino (ITA, Colacino), relied on the wet weather tyres from exclusive supplier Pirelli.

It was soon clear that they had bet on the right card. Ghiotto was already in front under hard braking into the first corner. Pole setter Marc Faggionato, who was cautious at the start, immediately lost a few places. Gianluca De Lorenzi (SMR, GDL Racing) slid into the gravel with under-tempered slicks in the wet, but was able to continue and Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International) was also only just able to avoid a spin in the first couple of corners.

Marco Ghiotto’s first pursuer was Andreas Fiedler (GER, Fiedler Racing), who started the race from only 11th on the grid and crossed the start-finish line in second place after lap 1. But on lap 4, the German parked his GP2-Dallara in the paddock and was sad about the missed chance.

But the action continued: Ingo Gerstl (AUT, Top Speed), who had started from pitlane with his Formula 1 Toro Rosso, tried to get through the packed field. In lap 5 he had reached the front of the pack and started chasing Ghiotto, until tyre blistering stopped him as well. At that time Luca Martucci (ITA, MM International) took over second place. Martucci drove the fastest race lap but lost too much time to Ghiotto in the early stages of the race. Meanwhile, the 2020 and 2021 FORMULA champion was looking for every wet spot on the asphalt to keep his rain tyres alive. A late safety car period helped Marco Ghiotto to clinch the race victory.

Martucci finished second and made up six places compared to qualifying. Gianluca De Lorenzi recovered quickly from his initial excursion into the gravel trap, third place is the well-deserved reward on his BOSS GP debut. Ulf Ehninger (GER, ESBA Racing) benefited from Gerstl’s retirement, but the Benetton driver can still refer to a controlled race in slippery conditions. Even a short ride through the gravel could not stop Ehninger. He was awarded with a well-deserved winner’s trophy in the OPEN class – the first of his BOSS GP career!

Nicolas Matile (MCO, Zig-Zag) and Bruno Jarach (EST, Eesti Motorsport) had a lap-long duel. Matile in the Auto GP was slightly faster in the corners, Jarach in his GP2 on the straights. In the end Matile was able to beat Jarach, which meant sixth place for the Monegasque.

The race of Simone Colombo (ITA, MM International) and Marc Faggionato (MCO, Zig-Zag) ended unhappily in the gravel bed of turn 1. In the duel for the podium, the two collided slightly. The revenge of the beaten may follow tomorrow. Race 2 starts at 14:25 local time. The race will be broadcast on Italian television (MS Motortv) and on race organiser Gruppo Peroni’s YouTube channel. Before that, a warm-up will be run at 10:00 am.
