Qualifying at Paul Ricard with some strange failures

While Le Castellet and its Circuit Paul Ricard continously are heating up, BOSS GP teams went on track for Qualifying at Saturday morning at temperatures of about 27°. Under best conditions Qualifying brought some „strange failures“, as Harald Michel, Official Scrutineer of BOSS GP Championship, recapped the session.

At first the Top 8 drivers of Fridays practice day – Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed), Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport), Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team), David Moretti (Griffith’s) and Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport) – entered the 5.842 km long track.

Two drivers left the Qualifying unplanned. While Wolfgang Jaksch with his Super Aguri SA06 failed due to a major driving error already early, Johan Ledermair in his GP 2 Dallara was stopped by a technical problem. „The car had an fatigue fracture“, Ledermair wasn’t pleased by his unexpected exit, „our team will work out on that. We hopefully will fix the problem until the race on the afternoon“. Nevertheless – with a 1:49.560 min he raced onto start position 3 for the race this afternoon before he had to exit. No technical problem, but a „clear driving error I made“, stopped Wolfgang Jaksch already in round 3. „I was delayed by Moretti in the first round. So I really had to push hard the following round, to improve my time. I managed to overtake him, but misjugded my braking phase afterwards; so I missed to take the turn properly and got stucked in the gravel trap“, Jaksch summed his performance up. „Luckily I made at least one counted lap“, he adds, starting with a 1:54.722 min lap-time on start position 6.

The two exits slowed down leading Ingo Gerstl, who raced onto pole position nevertheless. „If everything runs smoothly, I improve my time each round. So for the Qualifying I targeted a 1:40′ lap-time. Unfortunately we had to slow down twice during the Qualifying, which only gives us 8 minutes, to race a best time“, Gerstl summarized the Qualifying. „Of course I’m fine with starting from pole-position. But actually there could have been potential for a much better time on the track“, the current leader of the OPEN class made his point. He now is „looking forward to great race and especially the duel with Rinus van Kalmthout“. The 16 years old Dutch raced onto position 2 in his GP2 Evo Dallara.

In the second stage of the Qualifying the Top 9 until Top 18 entered the Paul Ricard track. Two more early exits by Karl-Heinz Becker (Becker Motorsport) already in round 2 and Peter Göllner (Speed Center) in round 7 made it 4 out of 18 drivers quitting the Qualifying earlier than planned. „Yes, we had some strange failures at this Qualifying“, Scrutineer Michel summed it up. „But apart from this fact Qualifying went well, we are satisfied with the performance of the grid.“

Started in the second chapter of the Qualifying, Armando Mangini (MM International Motorsport) with his GP 2 Dallara managed to improved time and position into to Top 8 field and moved forward in the starting grid; he will now start from position 8 in the afternoon.

The starting grid for season race 5 is set, and will be led by the „usual suspects“. The setup of Ingo Gerstl holding the pole position, followed by Rinus van Kalmthout on position 2, Johann Ledermair on third position promises an exciting top of the field.

Während Le Castellet und der Circuit Paul Ricard unter der Sonne Südfrankreichs schwitzen, ging es für die BOSS GP Teams am Samstagvormittag bei 27° zum Qualifying auf die Strecke. Bei besten Bedingungen gab es einige „kuriose Ausfälle“, wie Harald Michel, Official Scrutineer der BOSS GP Meisterschaft, es auf den Punkt brachte.

Zunächst ging es für die Top 8 des Trainingstags am Freitag – Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed), Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport), Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport), Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team), David Moretti (Griffith’s) und Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport) – auf die 5.842 km lange Strecke.

Für gleich zwei von ihnen endete das Qualifying vorzeitig und ungeplant. So schied Wolfgang Jaksch mit seinem Super Aguri SA06 nach einem gravierenden Fahrfehler bereits frühzeitig aus, Johan Ledermair in seinem GP 2 Dallara wurde durch ein technisches Problem gestoppt. „Wir haben einen Ermüdungbruch“, war Ledermair alles andere als erfreut über seinen unfreiwilligen vorzeitigen Ausstieg. „Das Team wird sich das jetzt genau anschauen. Ich hoffe, dass wir das Problem bis zum Rennen am Nachmittag beheben können.“ Nichtsdestotrotz sicherte sich Ledermair mit einer Bestrundenzeit von 1:49.560 min Startposition 3. Keine technischen Probleme, sondern „ein ganz klarer Fahrfehler von mir“, katapultierte Wolfgang Jaksch bereits in Runde 3 aus dem Qualifying. „Moretti hat mich in der ersten Runde ausgebremst. Daher musste ich in der nächsten Runde richtig pushen, um meine Zeit deutlich zu verbessern. Nachdem ich ihn überholt hatte, habe ich die Bremsphase falsch eingeschätzt, die Kurve nicht richtig erwischt und bin neben der Strecke gelandet“, erklärte Jaksch sein frühes Aus. „Glücklicherweise hatte ich vorher schon eine Runde auf Zeit absolviert“, war der Fahrer der OPEN Class froh, sich mit den 1:54.722 min zumindest Startposition 6 für das Rennen am Nachmittag geholt zu haben.

Die zwei Ausfälle bremsten auch den Führenden, Ingo Gerstl, aus, der dennoch auf die Pole Position fuhr. „Wenn alles nach Plan läuft, werde ich von Runde zu Runde schneller. Ich hatte eine 1:40er Rundenzeit angepeilt. Da wir während des  Qualifyings jedoch zwei mal Tempo lassen mussten, blieb in den acht Minuten nur wenig Zeit, eine Spitzenzeit zu fahren“, fasste Gerstl das Qualifying zusammen. „Natürlich bin ich zufrieden mit der Pole Position. Aber zeitmäßig wäre deutlich mehr drin gewesen“, haderte der aktuell Führende im Gesamtranking der OPEN Class mit dem Verlauf des Qualifyings. „Wir werden nun hoffentlich ein gutes Rennen haben. Ich freue mich vor allem auf das Duell mit Rinus van Kalmthout.“ Der 16-Jährige fuhr im GP2 Evo Dallara auf Startposition 2.

Im zweiten Abschnitt des Qualifyings ging es für die Top 9 bis Top 18 des Trainingstages auf die Strecke. Mit Karl-Heinz Becker (Becker Motorsport) bereits in Runde 2 sowie Peter Göllner (Speed Center) in Runde 7 schieden auch hier zwei Fahrer vorzeitig aus, so dass insgesamt 4 der 18 Fahrer das Qualifying früher als geplant beendeten. „Das waren wirklich einige kuriose Ausfälle“, meinte Scrutineer Michel anschließend. „Davon abgesehen verlief das Qualifying ohne Probleme und wir können zufrieden sein.“

Im zweiten Durchgang gestartet, konnte Armando Mangini (MM International Motorsport) mit seinem GP 2 Dallara seine Zeit signifikant verbessern und schob sich ins Top 8 Feld vor. Er startet am Nachmittag somit von Position 8.

Die Startaufstellung für das fünfte Saisonrennen steht damit fest. Das Feld wird einmal mehr von den „üblichen Verdächtigen“ angeführt. Die Kombination von Ingo Gerstl auf der Pole Position, gefolgt von Rinus van Kalmthout auf Position 2 und Johann Ledermair auf Position 3 verspricht in jedem Fall Spannung an der Spitze des Feldes.

Strahlend blauer Himmel und 25° – Le Castellet meint es gut mit BOSS GP. Die Bedingungen in Südfrankreich sind hervorragend, und passend zum Wetter erwischten die BOSS GP Teams einen Trainingstag, an dem fast alles nach Plan lief.

„Beide Trainings verliefen gut, mit Ausnahme einiger technischer Probleme des Dallaras von Karl-Heinz Becker“, berichtet Rennkoordinator Christian Gänse und war zufrieden mit dem Verlauf des Trainingstages auf der Strecke in Le Castellet.

Am schnellsten unterwegs – die „üblichen Verdächtigen“. So führte Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) das erste Training in seinem Toro Rosso STR1 (OPEN Class) mit einer Bestrundenzeit von 1:48,490 min auf der 5.842 km langen Strecke an. Ihm auf den Fersen mit der zweitbesten Rundenzeit Teamkollege Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), der in seinem Dallara (FORMULA Class) auf eine Bestzeit von 1:56.394 min kam. Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) in seinem Lola (FORMULA Class) knapp dahinter (1:57.001 min), ebenso wie Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) im Dallara (FORMULA Class) mit 1:58.614 min blieben ebenfalls unter einer Rundenzeit von zwei Minuten.

Beste Bedingungen waren auch für die zweite Trainingseinheit am frühen Nachmittag gegeben. Während das Feld erneut von Ingo Gerstl angeführt wurde, der seine Bestrundenzeit auf 1:47.292 min verbesserte, pirschte sich Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport, OPEN Class) an das Spitzenfeld heran und fuhr eine Bestrundenzeit von 1:50.726 min ein, mit der er die zweitbeste Zeit im zweiten freien Training erzielte. Johann Ledermair, aktuell Führender des Gesamtklassements in der FORMULA Class, verbesserte seine Bestrundenzeit ebenfalls deutlich auf 1:52.722 min und komplettierte damit die „Top 3“ der zweiten Einheit des Tages.

Mit Mahaveer Raghunathan (1:54.383 min), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (1:55.229 min), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team, OPEN Class, 1:56.343 min), David Moretti (Griffith’s, FORMULA Class, 1:57.912 min), Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport, FORMULA Class, 1:58.297 min) und Henk de Boer (De Boer Manx, FORMULA Class, 1:59.297 min) erzielten gleich neun Fahrer eine Bestrundenzeit von unter zwei Minuten.  Ein vielversprechender Start für das BOSS GP Rennwochenende in Le Castellet.

Blue sky and 25° – Le Castellet obviously wants the best for BOSS GP. Fitting to great weather in southern France, the BOSS GP teams had an practice day, which mostly run according to the plan. 

„Both training sessions went well with the exception of some technical problems of the Dallara from Karl-Heinz Becker“, race-coordinator Christian Gänse was satisfied with the performance on practice day.

Fastest drivers on track – the „usual suspects“. First practice session was led by Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed) in his Toro Rosso STR1 (OPEN class) with a best lap-time of 1:48.490 min on the 5.842 km long track. He was followed by teammate Florian Schnitzenbaumer (Top Speed), who got a best lap-time of 1:56.394 min in his Dallara (FORMULA class). Mahaveer Raghunathan (PS Racing by Coloni Motorsport) in his Lola (FORMULA class) sharply behind (1:57.001 min) and Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) in his Dallara (FORMULA class) as well sharply behind (1:58.614 min) also remained under the two-minutes-mark.

Best conditions on the track as well at the second practice of the day on early afternoon. While the grid was lead again by Ingo Gerstl, who improved his best lap up to 1:47.292 min, Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport, OPEN class) sneaked up and showed his best lap in 1:50.726 min, which made him the second best ranked driver of the session. Johann Ledermair, current leader of the FORMULA class overall ranking, improved his best lap significantly as well with 1:52.722 min and made it into the „Top 3“ of the second practice session.

With Mahaveer Raghunathan (1:54.383 min), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (1:55.229 min), Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team, OPEN class, 1:56.343 min), David Moretti (Griffith’s, FORMULA class, 1:57.912 min), Salvatore De Plano (MM International Motorsport, FORMULA class, 1:58.297 min) and Henk de Boer (De Boer Manx, FORMULA class, 1:59.297 min) nine drivers made it to a < 2 minutes lap. A promising kick-off for a fast race weekend in Le Castellet.

Startfeld für Paul Ricard in Le Castellet steht fest

Es ist wieder soweit. In dieser Woche steht die dritte Station der BOSS GP Meisterschaft 2017 an (10.-11./06.2017). Das Startfeld für die Saisonrennen 5 und 6 steht fest.

Gastgeber sind an diesem Wochenende die „GT Open & Euroformula Open“ auf der französischen Rennstrecke „Paul Ricard“ in Le Castellet. Das letzte Mal fuhren die BOSS GP Teams bei der „FFSA Historic Tour“ im Mai 2015 auf dieser Strecke. Fahrer und Crews kehren somit nach einer einjährigen Pause auf die Rennstrecke zurück, die im kommenden Jahr nach zehnjähriger Pause erstmals wieder im Rahmen der Formel 1 einen „Großen Preis von Frankreich“ austragen wird.

14 Fahrer gehen am Wochenende in Le Castellet in der FORMULA Class an den Start. Der aktuelle Führende der Klasse, Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport, Foto), wird ebenso auf die Jagd nach den nächsten Podiumsplatzierungen gehen wie der Zweitplatzierte, Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport), und der aktuelle Dritte im Ranking, Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport). Mit Veronika Cicha, die nach ihrer Pause in Zandvoort die Strecke Paul Ricard fahren wird, wird es zudem diesmal wieder ein Rennen mit weiblicher Beteiligung geben. Das Startfeld für die FORMULA Class in Le Castellet, Paul Ricard, 2017 sieht wie folgt aus:

Der amtierende Meister und aktuell Führende der OPEN class, Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed), wird auf der Strecke in Le Castellet wieder an den Start gehen, ebenso wie Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team), der in Zandvoort ausgesetzt hatte. Auch Rinus van Kalmtouth (Mansell Motorsport), der vor drei Wochen in Zandvoort sein Debüt in der BOSS GP gab, wird auf dem Paul Ricard Circuit starten. Der Franzose Patrick D’Aubreby (Griffith’s) wird hingegen erstmals in dieser Saison starten und somit auf seiner „Heimstrecke“ seine Saisonpremiere für BOSS GP geben.

BOSS GP trägt seine Rennen 2017 auf sieben europäischen Strecken mit insgesamt 14 Rennen aus. Hockenheim im April und Zandvoort im May sind bereits Geschichte. Paul Picard (FRA) ist Gastgeber für die Saisonrennen 5 und 6. Die verleibenden Rennen werden in Zolder (BEL), Assen (NED), Brno (CZE) und Imola (ITA) stattfinden.

Start list for races at Paul Ricard in Le Castellet is set

Third station of  the BOSS GP Championship season 2017 this weekend (10.-11./06.2017) is around the corner. The start list for the races in France is now set. 

Host for season races 5 and 6 is the „GT Open & Euroformula Open“ at the French Circuit „Paul Ricard“ in Le Castellet. Last time, BOSS GP teams were racing at this track, was at the „FFSA Historic Tour“ in May 2015. So drivers and crews will be back on the track, which will host a „Grand Prix of France“ at the Formula 1 in 2018, ten years after the last F1-race in France was held.

14 drivers will compete in the FORMULA class this weekend. Current leader of the class, Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport, picture), will be on track again, hunting for the next podiums, as well as the second of the ranking, Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport), and the third, Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport). Since Veronika Cicha will race at Paul Ricard again, the races will have a female participant again for the second time this season. Reigning Champion and current leader of the OPEN class, Ingo Gerstl (Top Speed), will be back on track in Le Castellet as well as Wolfgang Jaksch (F Xtreme Racing Team), who didn’t race in Zandvoort either. Also Rinus van Kalmtouth (Mansell Motorsport), who made his BOSS GP debut in Zandvoort three weeks ago, will start at Paul Ricard. The French Patrick D’Aubreby (Griffith’s) will run his first race of the BOSS GP championship 2017 on his „home track“.

BOSS GP will compete at seven different European venues in 2017, holding 14 races in total. Hockenheim in April and Zandvoort in May are done. Paul Picard (FRA) will set season races 5 and 6. Remaining tracks are Zolder (BEL), Assen (NED), Brno (CZE) and Imola (ITA).

Ledermair dominiert auch das zweite Rennen in Zandvoort

Nach einem packenden Rennen am Samstag beim „Jumbo Race Festival“ in Zandvoort, hielt auch Rennen 4 der BOSS GP Saison 2017 am Sonntag einige Überraschungen bereit. Das Podium der FORMULA Class war nach den 14 absolvierten Runden das gleiche, wie im Rennen zuvor. Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) dominierte das Rennen klar, gefolgt von Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport) und Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport). Leider schieden beide Fahrer der OPEN Class, Marijn und Rinus van Kalmthout (beide Mansell Motorsport) frühzeitig aufgrund eines Crashs sowie mit technischen Problemen aus dem Rennen aus. 

Während Johann Ledermair seine Pole Position im Dallara GP2 bis in die erste Kurve hinein, die „Tarzanbocht“, gegen den attackierenden Rinus van Kalmthout im Dallara GP2 Evo, der von Position 2 gestartet war, verteidigen konnte, gab es für Marijn van Kalmthout Riesentrouble. Nach einem Crash – van Kalmthout hatte Christian Eicke (Speed Center) beim Attackieren touchiert – verlor der  Benetton B197 F1 des Holländers direkt auf der Startgeraden einen Reifen. Für den Lokalmatador bedeutete dies gleichzeitig das viel zu frühe Aus. Es folgten mehrere Runden unter gelber Flagge und mit Safety Car für das restliche Startfeld. Für die Fahrer galt es gar, die Boxengasse noch einmal zu passieren, da die Startgerade durch die Bergung von van Kalmthouts Benetton blockiert war. „Das war keine einfache Startphase. Ich musste schauen, dass der Motor während der Saftey Car Phase nicht überhitzt und die Reifen auf der Temperatur bleiben,  die sie benötigen“, erklärte Johann Ledermair die schwierigen Bedingungen eingangs des Rennens.

Bereits während der Safety Car Phase musste dann auch noch Rinus van Kalmthout, der einzig verbliebene Fahrer in der OPEN Class mit seinem Dallara GP2 Evo in die Box zurück, da sein Wagen technische Probleme hatte. Saisonrennen 4 erwies sich damit praktisch als exklusives FORMULA Class-Rennen.

Nach einem Crash direkt auf der Startgeraden war das Rennen für Marijn van Kalmthout frühzeitig vorbei.

 

Nachdem das Safety Car die Strecke verlassen und das Rennen wieder freigegeben war, boten sich die „üblichen Verdächtigen“ an der Spitze den Fight um die Podiumsplätze. Ledermair behauptete seine Position und fuhr somit den Rennsieg heim, mit einer Bestzeit in Runde 5 von 1:25.591 min. Dem Österreicher dicht auf den Fersen war Mahaveer Raghunathan, der seine beste Zeit in Runde 10 mit 1:27.675 min fuhr. Der 18-jährige, gebürtige Inder, war zufrieden mit seiner Performance und seiner Platzierung (P2), wenngleich er bereits direkt nach der Siegerehrung schon auf das nächste Rennen (Paul Ricard Circuit/Frankreich, 10-11/06/2017) schaute. „Der Start heute war nicht einfach, doch wir konnte die Situation gut handeln. Anschließend war es kein leichtes Rennen, in dem ich mein Bestes gegeben habe. Mein Ziel war es, das Tempo weiter zu erhöhen und meinen Rundenrekord aus dem dritten Rennen gestern noch einmal zu verbessern. Das ist mir gelungen, daher bin ich schlussendlich zufrieden mit meiner Leistung in dieser Woche und meinen Ergebnissen“, erklärte Raghunathan.

Ein riesiges Lächeln auf dem Gesicht trug Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport), als er das Podium erklomm. Nach einem P3 am Samstag konnte er diese Position auch im zweiten Rennen verteidigen und seine starke Leistung an diesem Wochenende noch einmal unterstreichen. „Die Strecke war für mich eine große Herausforderung. Ich bin noch nie zuvor in Zandvoort gefahren, daher lag mein absoluter Fokus zunächst auf der Strecke und ihren Besonderheiten“, erzählte de Plano uns nach dem Rennen und kam regelrecht ins Schwärmen. „Die Strecke ist unglaublich, allerdings musst du sie auch sehr gut kennen, wenn du sie wirklich gut fahren willst. Aus diesem Grund bin ich unglaublich glücklich und zufrieden mit meinen Ergebnissen an diesem Wochenende. Ich habe es zwei Mal auf’s Podium geschafft und nicht allzu viele Punkte in der Meisterschaft verloren. Mein Auto lief perfekt und ich habe mein persönliches Ziel, es so nah wie möglich an Position heran zu kommen, erreicht.“ Ebenso wie Raghunathan möchte auch de Plano seine gute Form auf der Strecke in Le Castellet, Paul Ricard, im Juni erneut unter Beweis stellen.

Dem Podium folgten Marc Fagionatto (Zig-Zag) auf Position 4, Florian Schnitzenbaumer (5., Top Speed), Henk de Boer (6., De Boer Manx), Peter Göllner (7., Speed Center), Christian Eicke (8., Speed Center), PETER (9., Easy Formula) und Karl-Heinz Becker (10., Becker Motorsport). Becker absolvierte lediglich elf Runden und schied nach technischen Problemen in seiner letzten Runde vorzeitig aus dem Rennen aus. „Wir wissen noch nicht, was die Ursache für die Probleme war. Das gilt es jetzt zu analysieren“, meinte Becker nach dem Rennen.

Sieger Ledermair war währenddessen zufrieden mit dem Verlauf seines Rennens: „Nach einem fordernden Start konnte ich mein Rennen gut unter Kontrolle bringen und es anschließend sicher heimfahren. Es gab einige Faktoren, auf die ich besonders achten musste, vor allem während der Safety Car Phase, aber es hat alles gut geklappt. Schlussendlich bin ich daher sehr glücklich über den klaren Sieg.“ Neben einem optimalen Rennwochenende nehmen Ledermair und sein Team jede Menge „Hausarbeiten“ mit in die Heimat nach Österreich, die es in den nächsten Wochen zu bearbeiten gibt. „Wir haben enorm viele Daten an diesem Wochenende gesammelt, die wir jetzt analysieren und auswerten müssen. Wir werden uns jetzt nicht ausruhen, sondern weiter hart arbeiten und alles daran setzen, das Auto noch schneller zu machen“, blickt der ambitionierte Youngster voraus.

After a thrilling race on Saturday at the „Jumbo Race Festival“ in Zandvoort race 4 of  the BOSS GP season 2017 on Sunday had some surprises too. The podium of the FORMULA class however after 14 laps was the same as the day before, Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) clearly dominating the grid, followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport) and Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport). Unfortunately both drivers of the OPEN class, Marijn and Rinus van Kalmthout (both Mansell Motorsport) dropped out of the race early due to a crash and technical reasons.

While Johann Ledermair could defend his pole position in his Dallara GP2 into the first curve, the „Tarzanbocht“, against attacking Rinus van Kalmthout in a Dallara GP2 Evo, who had started from position 2, Marijn van Kalmthout had huge trouble. After his Benetton B197 F1 got hit Kalmthout lost one of his tyres at the start straight, what meant a much to early out for the local hero. Couple of laps under yellow flag and safety car phase were following for the grid, drivers even had to pass the pit lane again, since the straight lane was blocked by rescue operation for Kalmthouts Benetton. „It was not too easy, to avoid overheating of the engines and keeping the tyres on the neccessary temperatures“, Johann Ledermair explained the difficult conditions at the first phase of the race.

Already during the safety car phase Rinus van Kalmthouth, the only left driver of the OPEN class in the grid, had to turn back to the box too, due to technical problems with his Dallara GP2 Evo. So season race 4 turned out to an exclusively FORMULA class race.

When the safety car had left and the track finally was open for pure racing again, the „usual suspects“ were competing for the podium. Ledermair kept the lead and grabbed P1, driving his best lap time in round 5 with 1:25.591 min. The Austrian was closely followed by Mahaveer Raghunathan, who showed his best lap time in round 10 with 1:27.675 min. The 18 years old Indian was happy with his performance and P2, despite he looked ahead to the next races (Paul Ricard Circuit/France, 10-11/06/2017) directly after the award ceremony. „The start of todays race was not that easy, but everything worked out well. Finally it was a tough race again, but I did my best. The goal was, to increase speed and improve the lap record from yesterdays race. That worked out well, so finally I’m happy with the performance this week and my overall results“, Raghunathan explained.

With a huge smile on his face Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport) climbed onto the podium. After P3 on saturday he defended this position at race 2 and stressed out his great performance this weekend. „The track was a huge challenge to go for. I have never raced in Zandvoort before, so my focus on the track and its characteristics was immense“, de Plano told us after the race and started to rave about the track. „It is amazing, but you have to now the track very well, to have a good race. So I’m really happy with my result this weekend, since I could make it twice onto the podium and didn’t loose to many points in the championship. The car was perfect and I reached my personal goal, to come as close as possible to position 2.“ As Raghunathan also de Plano wants to confirm his good shape on the track in Le Castellet at Paul Ricard in June.

The podium was followed by Marc Fagionatto (Zig-Zag) on position 4, Florian Schnitzenbaumer (5., Top Speed), Henk de Boer (6., De Boer Manx), Peter Göllner (7., Speed Center), Christian Eicke (8., Speed Center), PETER (9., Easy Formula) and Karl-Heinz Becker (10., Becker Motorsport). Becker just finished eleven laps, having technical issues in his last lap which forced him to finish the race. „We don’t know yet, what caused the problems. We have to analyse this issue“, Becker told after the race.

Meanwhile winning Ledermair was satisfied with his progess during the race: „After an challenging start I was able, to control the race and bring it home safely. There were some factors, I had to pay my attention especially during the safety car phase, but everything worked out well. So at the end, I’m very happy with that clear win.“ Besides and optimum of a race weekend Ledermair and his team take some „homework“ back to Austria, they will work on until the next race. „We collected lots of data this weekend, we have to analyze. Of course we wont sit back now, but continue our work and make any effort, to increase the speed further on“, the ambitious youngster is looking into the future.

Next station for the BOSS GP championship 2017 is set already in three weeks. Circuit Paul Ricard in France, Le Castellet, will be the host with its „GT OPEN & EUROFORMULA OPEN“.

Nachdem nach dem Qualifying die Rede von einer regelrechten „Explosion“ war, müssen wir scheinbar den nächsten Superlativ für die Sensation finden, die sich im ersten BOSS GP Rennen beim „Jumbo Race Festival“ in Zandvoort am Samstagnachmittag abspielte. Youngster Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) aus Österreich dominierte nicht nur die FORMULA Class klar, sondern schlug zugleich Lokalmatador Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport) aus der OPEN Class im FORMULA Wagen.

Die Erwartungen von Fans und Zuschauern auf ein spannendes erstes Rennen beim „Jumbo Race Festival“  in Zandvoort wurden voll erfüllt, als sich Johann Ledermair aus der FORMULA Class in seinem Dallara GP2 gegen Rinus van Kalmthout aus der OPEN Class im Dallara GP1 Evo durchsetzte. Während Ledermair seine beste Runde in 1:24.193 min fuhr, brachte Rinus van Kalmthout es auf eine Bestzeit ovn 1:24.549 min. Beide Youngster führten das Feld mit einem deutlichen Vorsprung an, was von einem spektakulären Überholmanöver Ledermairs in Runde 10 noch getoppt wurde, nachdem er die P1 in den verbleibenden Runden über die Ziellinie brachte.

„Wir hatten heute wirklich starke Konkurrenz auf der Strecke. Aber ich denke, ich habe mir das Rennen sehr gut eingeteilt“, analysierte Gesamtsieger Johann Ledermair, der von Position 3 ins Rennen gestartet war, seine Performance nach der Siegerehrung. “Ich konnte mir direkt nach dem Start Position 2 holen, hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt aber noch einen deutlichen Abstand auf den Führenden, Rinus von Kalmthout. Ich habe mich Stück für Stück an ihn herangearbeitet, dabei aber auch die Bedingungen für die Reifen nicht aus den Augen gelassen. Schließlich habe ich van Kalmthout attackiert, wurde aber direkt zurück überholt. Beim zweiten Überholmanöver hat alles gepasst und ich dachte mir „jetzt nur noch ab nach vorn“.  Schlussendlich hat es gepasst und ich konnte den Sieg heimfahren.“

Nachdem er das Feld lange angeführt hatte landete der jüngste Fahrer des Startfeldes und BOSS GP-Newcomer Rinus von Kalmthout also auf P2. Nachdem er von der Pole Position auf die Strecke gestartet war und einen packenden Kampf mit Johann Ledermair gezeigt hatte, heimste der 16-jährige Holländer nicht nur P2 des Gesamtstartfeldes ein, sondern auch P1 in der OPEN class.

P2 in der FORMULA class, Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport), zeigte sich zwar einverstanden mit seinem Platz auf dem Podium und einer Runden-Bestzeit von 1:28.344 min, war jedoch nicht zu 100% glücklich: “Ich hätte ein deutlich besseres Ergebnis fahren können, wenn ich nicht vom einem anderen Fahrer blockiert worden wäre“, war der 18-jährige Raghunathan nach der Siegerehrung noch etwas ungehalten. “Ich werde morgen angreifen und das im nächsten Rennen zeigen“, ist der gebürtige Inder mehr als motiviert für das vierte Saisonrennen, welches Sonntagmittag ausgetragen wird.

Unterdessen völlig zufrieden mit seinem P3 in der FORMULA Class und seiner ersten Podiumsplatzierung in der Saison war Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport), der eine Bestrundenzeit von 1:29.180 min herausfuhr, gefolgt von BOSS GP Rückkehrer Marc Fagionatto (4., Zig Zag) mit 1:29.853 min.

Henk de Boer (5., De Boer Manx), Peter Göllner (6., Speed Center), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (7., Top Speed), Karl-Heinz Becker (8., Becker Motorsport) und Christian Eicke (9., Speed Center) vervollständigten das Ranking in der FORMULA Class. Mit nur 9 ausgetragenen Runden erzielte ‘PETER’ keine Klassifizierung für das Gesamtranking, da dafür 11 Runden notwendig gewesen wären (75% der gefahrenden Runden von P1 (= 14)).

Als deutlich überschaubarer erwies sich hingegen das Klassement in der OPEN Class: Nach Rinus van Kalmthout auf P1 folgte sein Vater, Marijn van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport). Der erfahrene Fahrer musste sich in der fünften Runde aufgrund von Reifenproblemen in die Box begeben. Anschließend beendete er das Rennen mit ingesamt elf Runden auf Platz 11, welches dennoch P2 in der OPEN Class bedeutete, da für Zandvoort nur zwei Fahrer in dieser Klasse gemeldet hatten.

Einen packenden ersten Renntag schloss P1 des Gesamtklassements, Johann Ledermair, mit seinem Statement über den Schlüssel seines Erfolges ab: „Der Sieg heute war vor allem das Resultat eines intensiven Trainingstages am Freitag sowie anschließend noch jeder Menge Arbeit“, erklärte Ledermair. “Mein Team hat einen großartigen Job geleistet und bis spät in die Nacht noch am Wagen gearbeitet. Ohne das Team und dessen Einsatz hätte ich das Rennen heute nicht so fahren können. Wir haben noch einmal das komplette Setup des Wagens geändert, nachdem wir im ersten Training ziemliche Probleme hatten. Im zweiten Training hatten wir bereits große Fortschritt gemacht, für das Qualifying und das Rennen haben wir aber immer noch etliche Dinge geändert, was sich am Ende ausgezahlt hat.” Ledermairs Coach, Oliver Saringer, war ebenso stolz auf seinen Schützling wie begeistert von dessen Auftritt: “Es ist Fakt, dass wir die OPEN Class mit einem FORMULA Wagen gewonnen haben. Das hat es so noch nie gegeben“, brachte er es auf den Punkt.

Aufgrund der Platzierungen im ersten Rennen ergeben sich die Startpositionen für das zweite Rennen am Sonntag, in welches Ledermair von der Pole Position, gefolgt von Rinus van Kalmthout auf Position 2, gehen wird. Nach einem aufregenden Rennen in Zandvoort können sich Zuschauer und Fans somit am Sonntag auf ein weiteres, spannendes Duell zwischen Ledermair und van Kalmthout jr. freuen.

First race: Johann Ledermair bringing the sensation to Zandvoort

Thinking, a super-fast qualifying was a blast today, one has to find a new superlative for the sensation, that happened at the first race of the “Jumbo Race Festival” in Zandvoort on Saturday afternoon. Austrian youngster Johann Ledermair (Ledermair Motorsport) was not only dominating the FORMULA class clearly, but also beat local hero Rinus van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport) of the OPEN class.

Hoping for an exciting first race at the “Jumbo Race Festival” in Zandvoort expectations were fulfilled, when Johann Ledermair of the FORMULA class in his Dallara GP2 beat Rinus van Kalmthout of the OPEN class in the Dallara GP1 Evo. While Ledermair set the lap record at 1:24.193 min, Rinus van Kalmthout finished his best lap in 1:24.549 min. Both youngsters enjoyed a clear lead of the grid, topped by a spectacular overtaking of Johann Ledermair in round 10, leading the grid for the last five laps on and bringing P1 home.

„This was a real strong competition. But I think, I managed well throughout the race”, winning Johann Ledermair, who had started from position 3, analyzed his performance after the awards ceremony. “I was able, to take the second position directly after the start, but having still quite a gap to the leading Rinus von Kalmthout. I moved closer step by step, always considering the conditions of the tyres well, got the kick and finally attacked van Kalmthout. While he overtook me back instantly at the first try, I got him at the second time and it was just a “now or never, bring that home”-motivation for me. So finally, I made it and got that victory home.”

So P2 was owned by the youngest driver of the grid, BOSS GP-newcomer Rinus von Kalmthout. Starting from the pole positing and showing the thrilling fight with Johann Ledermair the 16 years old Dutch finished with the overall P2, owning the P1 of the OPEN class.

P2 of the FORMULA class, Mahaveer Raghunathan (Coloni Motorsport), was fine with his podium position so far and a lap record of 1:28.344 min, but not 100% happy: “I could have gone for a better result, if I wouldn’t have been blocked by another driver”, 18 years old Raghunathan was not that satisfied. “I will go for this tomorrow and improve at the race on Sunday”, the P2 from India is more than motivated for season race 4.

Happy with the P3 of the FORMULA class and his first podium position of the season was Salvatore de Plano (MM International Motorsport) with his fastest lap in 1:29.180 min, followed by BOSS GP returnee Marc Fagionatto (Zig Zag) in 1:29.853 min.

Henk de Boer (5., De Boer Manx), Peter Göllner (6., Speed Center), Florian Schnitzenbaumer (7., Top Speed), Karl-Heinz Becker (8., Becker Motorsport) and Christian Eicke (9., Speed Center) completed the ranking. ‘PETER’ couldn’t be classified with a raced amount of just 9 laps, whereas 11 laps would have been necessary for a classification (75% of laps driven by the P1 (i.e. 14)).

Meanwhile the OPEN class provided a really clear arrangement: Rinus van Kalmthout on the P1 was just followed by his father, Marijn van Kalmthout (Mansell Motorsport). The experienced driver suffered problems with a tyre in round 5 and was forced to a pit stop. He finished the race with a total of 11 laps on the 11th position, nevertheless ranked in P2 of the OPEN class, since there were registered only two starters in the OPEN class at all in Zandvoort.

So, after an exciting first race day P1, Johann Ledermair, made a final statement about the key to success for winning the overall ranking at season race 3. “Winning today was also the result of an intensive practice-day on Friday and a lot of work after he second practice”, Ledermair explains. “My team did an incredible great job and put a lot of effort into the car until late into the night. Without them I couldn’t have done the race so well. We completely changed the setup of the car, after having quite a lot of problems during the first practice sessions. We made great progress at the second practice in the afternoon and after still some more changes for the race day we could progress once more for the Qualifying as well as the race.” Ledermairs coach, Oliver Saringer, was as well proud as thrilled about the performance of his Youngster: “It is a fact, that we won the OPEN class with a FORMULA car. That has never happened before”, he made the point.

The podium of the race means starting from pole position for Johann Ledermair in Sundays race. After the thrilling first race in Zandvoort, spectators and fans can look forward to another exciting battle between Ledermair and Rinus van Kalmthout again on Sunday, when the Dutch youngster will start from position 2.
