Jan Lammers: 'A Formula 1 is a very wild beast'

An impressive number of 42 different drivers have already featured in the BOSS GP this season. Several of those drivers take place behind the steering wheel of an (old) Formula 1. However, the only BOSS GP driver who actually participated in the FIA F1 world championship during his career is Jan Lammers. “A Formula 1 is a very wild beast,” explains the Zandvoort-born driver. “It’s like a tiger. It has so much power and speed.”

Best Dutchman on the F1-grid
After winning the European Formula 3 championship in 1978, Jan Lammers made his debut in the illustrious Formula 1 class one year later at the tender age of 22. His best result in his first F1 year in a Shadow was the ninth position. He was responsible for quite a stunt the next year when he started from fourth position in the GP of USA. No Dutchman has ever occupied a better position on the F1 grid. Unfortunately for Lammers, his ATS encountered technical problems at the start and his race came to an early end. After unsuccessful adventures at Ensign and Theodore, Lammers said farewell to Formula 1 in 1982, only to make a surprise comeback in 1992. His comeback at March cost Lammers a small fortune though and he did not really get to enjoy his time at the team as they went bankrupt pretty fast.
