The new BOSS GP-season got off to a good start last weekend with 21 beautiful Big Open Single Seaters competing. Arnold Wagner was responsible for quite an upset with his beautiful Arrows Formula 1 at the ‘Hockenheim Historic – in memory of Jim Clark’.

He managed to win the opening race, despite starting from the last starting row. The second race was won by Marijn van Kalmthout, who also leads the general classification. Austrian driver Ingo Gerstl scooped up a double victory in the Formula-class, while French rookie Didier Sirgue and Norbert Gruber (Austria) recorded wins in the Masters-division.

Spectacular opening BOSS GP at Hockenheim Historic
The first race had quite an impressive line-up with over twenty participants with eight different nationalities. Marijn van Kalmthout, one of the founders of the BOSS GP-series, thus strolled around in the paddock with a satisfied grin on his face. “This is simply amazing to see so many old Formula 1s, GP2s, Champcars, Indycars, F3000s and World Series cars! Everybody is full of praise. Amazing.”

Race 1
Klaas Zwart (who won 10 out of last year’s 14 races) and Marijn van Kalmthout (victorious in the remaining four races) dominated the BOSS GP last year and both rivals started the opening race from the first starting row. Van Kalmthout, who shone with an impressive lap of 1 minute and 24 seconds during the qualification, noticed during the warm-up round that he had problems shifting gears. “Things only got worse during the race,” said the man who started from pole-position. “The steering wheel shook a lot as well and I just focussed on finishing the race. Third spot was unfortunately the maximum for me.”

Wrong adjustments
Klaas Zwart had some problems of his own with his car and he failed to create a big gap with the Ford-dealer from Hoofddorp. “I travelled to Hockenheim to race in my Jaguar, but the gearbox broke down during the free training. Therefore, I switched to the Benetton in which I won the title last year. That car wasn’t adjusted to my personal needs though, because I had hardly driven two laps in this car during the qualification. I had a lot of problems during the race because the car over steered. That’s why I was unable to stay ahead of the fast Arnold Wagner in the closing stages of the race.”
