Zwart holds on to perfect score despite strong comeback Van Kalmthout, Becker wins Masters Class

Race 1
Marijn van Kalmthout’s Benetton B197 F1 went like a rocket in the first race, too. The racing Ford-dealer didn’t waste any time to leave the rest of the 18 drivers behind him. However, things went wrong for Van Kalmthout halfway the race. The man who appeared to be on his way to beat Klaas Zwart for the first time this season noticed a problem with one of his tires when he entered the Kumho-curve and opted to drive his car toward the pits. “I had a similar problem during the races at Spa-Francorchamps and only just missed a wall with a speed of 250 kilometer per hour back then. I had no other choice than to drive to the pits. That was the end of the race and a huge disappointment for me.”

Nice battle
Klaas Zwart thus got the chance to take the lead and record a comfortable win. Frits van Eerd and Arnold Wagner were battling it out for the remaining podium spots well over ten seconds behind the veteran. Van Eerd had asked Klaas Zwart to prepare his Tyrrell last week and Van Eerd was faster than ever before at Zandvoort. German driver Wagner, who drives in Enrique Bernoldi’s old Arrows A22 F1, offered some good competition, but eventually just missed out on second spot.
